Serving Manatee and Sarasota Counties Since 2002
ABOUT THE
ANIMAL ER
The Animal ER of University Park, L.L.C. is staffed by veterinarians and licensed or highly experienced veterinary technicians who are physically present during all operating hours.
The Animal ER is a well equipped facility with diagnostic, surgical and life-saving equipment.
The Animal ER of University Park was created because the people of north Sarasota county and the entirety of Manatee county were having to travel too far for veterinary emergency care which at the time was located in south Sarasota county. The founders of the Animal ER recognized this need, and in November of 2002 opened the Animal ER to serve the people and pets of Manatee and north Sarasota counties.
Since that time, we have been open every night, weekend, and holiday.
The facilities of the Animal ER consist of a reception area, 4 examination rooms (2 for cats, and 2 for dogs), a large combined treatment/pharmacy/critical patient area, ward room consisting of 6 large runs and multitude of smaller kennels. A surgical suite, fully stocked laboratory, radiology suite, and separate isolation ward.
We are also happy to say, we work closely with the Canine Units of both Manatee and Sarasota counties, along with a multitude of animal rescue groups.
Currently the staff of the Animal ER of University Park consists of:
3 full time Veterinarians,
2 part time Veterinarians,
4 Certified Veterinary Technicians/Licensed Veterinary Technicians
2 Highly experienced Veterinary Technicians (10+ years of emergency technician experience each),
1 Veterinary Assistant,
1 full time Receptionists,
3 part time Receptionists
2 Blood Donor Cats; Grendal and Grayson.
1 Veterinarian Intern
We would also like to let you know, there are a few things which the Animal ER does not provide. These services and products will need to be obtained from your regular Veterinarian. The Animal ER does not provide preventative health care services or products (ie, vaccinations, spays or neuters, tick control products, food sales, or heartworm prevention).
Patients are seen on a first come first served basis with more serious patients receiving a priority. The Animal ER does not take appointments; however, a phone call prior to the visit is recommended and extremely appreciated.
Through the American Veterinary Medical Foundation’s Veterinary Care Charitable Fund, our hospital is able to help animals rescued from abuse and neglect and the pets of clients facing personal hardships. Your donations to the AVMF on behalf of our hospital will help us help animals. Click on the AVMF donate button to make your tax deductible donation.

We hope we never have to see you, however if a visit is required, we understand it will be while you are under a great deal of stress as your beloved pet is experiencing an unexpected illness or injury. Our goal is to make the visit as comfortable as possible while letting you know what to expect……..
First you will be greeted by one of our receptionists who will ask for general information regarding you and your pet.
Next either a veterinary assistant or a certified veterinary technician will assess the pet to ensure they are stable enough to wait in the reception area. This is called Triage.
If your pet is not stable, your pet will be transferred directly to the treatment area to be examined by one of our veterinarians. The doctor or technician will give an update as soon as possible.
During this time, you will have been asked to fill out a “check in form” which provides us with important information about yourself and your pet, and while also giving us permission to treat your pet. Once a room is available, a technician or veterinary assistant will take your pets’ vital signs and history regarding this visit, medication being administered, and any pre-existing problems.
Following, the veterinarian will then exam the pet, and give recommendations regarding diagnostics and potential treatments.
A treatment plan will be presented by the veterinary technician or veterinary assistant regarding the diagnostics and treatments discussed with the Veterinarian.
If the problems identified require hospitalization, we will make all attempts to make the visit as comfortable as possible. All pets are provided a bed and excellent nursing care.
You are more than welcome to call to get updates regarding your pet while hospitalized.
At discharge, your regular veterinarian will receive a fax of the medical record so continuity of care will not be compromised. You will also be given any radiographs or other diagnostic results to give to your regular doctor during the follow up visit with them. Also, during discharge, you will be given instructions regarding care at home, in addition to a medical record of the visit for your records.
